Even more shocking, rivals Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago all topped the Big Apple when it comes to helping others.
The determination was made using data related to informal and formal volunteering gathered from the country’s 12 largest metropolitan areas by AmeriCorps and the U.S. Census Bureau.
The information was gathered from September 2020 to 2021, while the country was still in various stages of lockdown amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Miami came in last in the “informal helping” category, with only 35.5% of residents lending a hand to those nearby.
Informal helping is defined by Americorps as “assisting others outside of an organizational context, including doing favors for neighbors.”
The Big Apple ranked toward the lower end of the list, placing eighth, with 43.6 percent of residents informally helping others during that time.
The three cities with the nicest neighbors get little love from New York: Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago.
The Windy City landed in third, with 54.6 percent of its inhabitants showing generosity during the pandemic.
Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, finished second despite its reputation for raucous sports fans.
Beantown had the most altruistic residents, with 57.9 percent of them assisting others.
